A Letter To My Daughter

Dear Julia,
Happy Birthday! My wish for you is to be happy each & everyday. For 9 years I have been blessed with your sweet loving spirit. I have many fond memories of you. When I was pregnant with you, I was so happy. I talked about you all the time, I could hardly wait for your arrival! Our home was filled with love for you long before you were born. While you were in my tummy I sang to you, read to you, & I prayed for you. We went to the beach, attended church, & traveled from California to Maryland, visiting all of our family along the way.
My dreams came true the day you were born.
Bringing you into the world was the hardest thing I have ever done, but October 19, 1999 was also one of the best days of my life! You were beautiful & healthy...you were mine. When your daddy laid you in my arms, your eyes were open & you looked at me while I talked to you. I said "I know God loves me, because he sent me an angel. You are more than just my baby girl, you are my sunshine." I could not stop smiling at you because you were so radiant, healthy & perfect. Your daddy & I took turns holding you & kissing your sweet soft skin.
I have always thought you have the most beautiful eyes. You had blue eyes until you were 3 years & 10 months old. Your eyes turned green just like your daddy just after he died. I know he is proud of the
big girl you are growing up to be.
I love the age you are today because you still have
time to read with me at night, I will treasure that for as long as it lasts. Even at 85 lbs, I love to carry you up the stairs. I love the way your arms & legs wrap around my body like a baby koala bear. My sweet Julia, your life has changed me for good. Because of you I try harder, I laugh louder, & I smile brighter. You are so happy, loving & compassionate. You make the world a better place, you are my angel here on earth. I admire your desire to follow the prophet. Nothing is better than being your mother & the proudest moments of my life involve you. I will always cherish you & love you. Thank you for being my sweet girl. Happy Birthday!

Behold Your Little Ones

My friend Andrea told me about this wonderful blog A Daily Scoop back in June. The first post I read on June 25th was so inspiring to me and I loved Stephanie immediately. I have read her blog religiously ever since for daily inspiration
& for a beautiful perspective on life.
Her message for the day was -- Love your little ones--even the ones that drive you crazy. If you could see them the way God sees them -- you would be astounded at their glory.

You may read the entire post Here.
This is the 1st comment that I left on her blog:

I think you are an amazing woman. Your girls are so blessed to have you for their mother. I admire your strength, testimony and life. You inspire me to be a little better. I will hug my daughter longer tonight because of you. Thank you so much.

Inspiration from a guy who rocks!

All my life I have been surrounded by women who inspired, taught, & encouraged me. You are treasured daughters of our Heavenly Father with infinite worth.
I’m sure it comes as no surprise, but the differences between men & women can often be quite striking—physically, mentally, & emotionally. One of the best ways I can think of to illustrate this is in the way my wife & I cook a meal.
When Harriet prepares a meal, it’s a masterpiece. Her cuisine is as wide-ranging as the world, and she frequently prepares dishes from countries we have visited. The presentation of the food is awe inspiring. In fact, it often looks so beautiful that it seems a crime to eat it. It’s as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the sense of taste.
But, no matter how perfect everything is, looks, & tastes, she will apologize for something she thinks is imperfect. “I’m afraid I used a touch too much ginger,” or, “Next time, I think it would be better if I used a little more curry

& 1 additional bay leaf.”
Let me contrast that with the way I cook. For the purpose of this talk, I asked Harriet to tell me what I cook best.
Her answer: fried eggs. Sunny-side up.
But that isn’t all. I have a specialty dish called Knusperchen. The name may sound like a delicacy you might find at an exclusive restaurant. Let me share with you how to make it. You cut French bread into small slices and toast them twice.
That is the recipe! Between fried eggs, even when they are greasy, & Knusperchen, even when they are burned,

It appears that women sometimes undervalue their abilities—they focus on what is lacking or imperfect rather than what has been accomplished and who they really are.
The good news is an admirable quality: the desire to please the Lord to the best of your ability. Unfortunately, it can lead to frustration, exhaustion, & unhappiness.
To All Who Are Weary
I would like to speak to those who have ever felt inadequate, discouraged, or weary~I would like to speak to all of us.
We know that sometimes it can be difficult to keep our heads above water. In our world of change, challenges, & checklists, sometimes it can seem nearly impossible to avoid feeling overwhelmed by emotions of suffering & sorrow.
I would like to speak about 2 principles that may help you find a path to peace, hope, and joy—even during times of trial & distress.
Though we cannot understand “the meaning of all things,” we do “know that God loveth his children” because He has said, “Behold, this is my work and my glory—to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man.”
Heavenly Father is able to accomplish these 2 great goals—the immortality and eternal life of man—because He is a God of creation & compassion. These two objectives contribute to our Heavenly Father’s perfect happiness. Creating & being compassionate are two activities that we as His spirit children can & should emulate.
The Work of Creation
The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul. No matter our talents, education, backgrounds, or abilities, we each have an inherent wish to create something that did not exist before.
Everyone can create. Creation brings deep satisfaction and fulfillment. We develop ourselves when we take unorganized matter into our hands and mold it into something of beauty.
You are spirit daughters of the most creative Being in the universe. Isn’t it remarkable to think that your spirits are fashioned by an endlessly creative & eternally compassionate God? Think about it—your spirit body is a masterpiece, created with a beauty, function, & capacity beyond imagination.
We were created with the purpose & potential of experiencing a fulness of joy. Our birthright & the purpose of our great voyage on this earth is to seek & experience eternal happiness. One of the ways we find this is by creating things.
If you are a mother, you participate with God in His work of creation—not only by providing physical bodies for your children but also by teaching and nurturing them. If you are not a mother now, the creative talents you develop will prepare you for that day, in this life or the next.
Creation means bringing into existence something that did not exist before—colorful gardens, harmonious homes, family memories, flowing laughter. What you create doesn’t have to be perfect. So what if the eggs are greasy or the toast is burned? Don’t let fear of failure discourage you. Don’t let the voice of critics paralyze you—whether that voice comes from the outside or the inside.
Try to see how many smiles you can create, write a letter of appreciation, learn a new skill, identify a space & beautify it.
The more you trust & rely upon the Spirit, the greater your capacity to create. That is your opportunity in this life and your destiny in the life to come. As you take the normal opportunities of your daily life and create something of beauty and helpfulness, you improve not only the world around you but also the world within you.
Being Compassionate
"We are commanded to “succor the weak, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.” Those who follow the Savior “mourn with those that mourn . . . and comfort those that stand in need of comfort.”
When we reach out to bless the lives of others, our lives are blessed as well. Service and sacrifice open the windows of heaven, allowing choice blessings to descend upon us. Surely our beloved Heavenly Father smiles upon those who care for the least of His children.
As we lift others, we rise a little higher ourselves. President Gordon B. Hinckley believed in the healing power of service. After the death of his wife, he provided a great example to the Church in the way he immersed himself in work and in serving others. He told a woman who had recently lost her husband, “Work will cure your grief. Serve others.”
As we lose ourselves in the service of others, we discover our own lives and our own happiness. While there are times when it is prudent to look first to our own needs, in the long run it doesn’t lead to lasting happiness.
An Instrument in the Hands of the Lord
“Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” Often I have witnessed quiet acts of kindness and compassion by noble women who extended themselves in unselfish charity. My heart swells when I hear stories of how they rush to the aid of those in need.
True words of encouragement require only a loving and caring heart but may have an eternal impact on the life of those around you.
Emulate the Savior, by serving others.

The brains behind "Not Me!" Monday
is MckMama @ My Charming Kids.
Basically you tell all of the "oh no you didn't"
things you did NOT do over the past week.
This is therapeutic & fun to do!
So, this is what I did not do this week....
- I did not let Julia stay up past 10 o'clock every night last week just because family was in town.
- I did not bribe my niece Alia to stop crying with starbursts. I also did not offer her starbursts after she only took one bite of her dinner! Nope..."Not Me!"
- I did not visit in the foyer for 10 minutes with my family after Mark spoke in sacrament meeting. Why would I do that when I have a CTR 6 class to teach? When I got to sharing time, Bishop Astle was sitting with the 6 children in my class. Oh boy...I got caught.
- I did not stay up until 1 am this morning blogging & creating a new post for Julia. I knew that I needed to get up at 5 am to go to the gym with Andrea...so I would not do that because I really need my beauty sleep.
- I did not eat apples dipped in creamy caramel for breakfast this morning.
- I do not blog at work..."Not Me!"
Oh that felt great!
I would love to hear your " I did nots!"

I would have to agree!
| You are a seeker of knowledge, and you have learned many things in your life. You are also a keeper of knowledge - meaning you don't spill secrets or spread gossip. You are usually the best at everything ... you strive for perfection. You are confident, authoritative, & aggressive. You have the classic "Type A" personality. You are wild, crazy, and a huge rebel. You're always up to something. You have a ton of energy, and most people can't handle you. You're very intense. You are a handful, & you're likely to get in trouble. But your kind of trouble is a lot of fun. You tend to be pretty tightly wound. It's easy to get you excited...which can be good or bad. You have a lot of enthusiasm, but it fades rather quickly. You don't stick with any one thing for very long. You have the drive to accomplish a lot in a short amount of time. Your biggest problem is making sure you finish the projects you start. You are relaxed, & likely to go w/ the flow. You are light hearted and accepting. You don't get worked up easily. You are well adjusted & incredibly happy, many people wonder what your secret to life is. You are a free spirit. You are unpredictable, adventurous, & always a little surprising. You may miss out by not settling down, but you're too busy having fun to care. You are very intuitive and wise. You understand the world better than most people. You also have a very active imagination. You often get carried away with your thoughts. Check Out Your Name's Meaning! |

For the Love of Apples...
Dessert came first tonight!
I believe these lovely Granny Smith apples fell from heaven, then hand-dipped in a soft, creamy caramel.
My favorite is sprinkled with cinnamon sugar...
that is my kind of Apple Pie! Yummy, yummy!
Sticky, chewy, sweet & crunchy, it is a treat that can't be beat. Sweet golden goodness makes me very happy.
Jocelyn & I found these at Tai Pan Trading Company,
I think they are absolutely divine!

It is a Wonderful Wednesday!

If I had really lived in the 60's...I would have wanted Marilyn to be my best friend. I know that she had Kathy, but I think we would have made a great trio!
I am so blessed because Marilyn is not just my mother, she is one of my best friends.
I am grateful for my mother who loves me so perfectly. She is patient & kind, her words encourage me & never hurt. My mother has always maintained a sweet loving spirit through every trial she has ever been faced with. Today my heart has been filled with beautiful thoughts & memories of my wonderful mother. Tonight I will give her a hug & tell her that I love her. I hope she has a wonderful Wednesday too.

Want to make your own smiley face cake pops?
I got this cute idea from Bakerella!
1 box cake mix (cook as directed for 9x13)
1 can frosting (16 oz)
Wax paper
Yellow candy melts
Lollipop sticks
Edible ink pens
- After cake is cooked and cooled completely, crumble into large bowl.
- Mix thoroughly with 1 can frosting. (I use the back of a large spoon, but it may be easier to use fingers to mix together. But, be warned, it will get messy. Also, you may not need the entire can of frosting, so start out by using almost the entire can and add more if you need to.)
- Roll mixture into quarter size balls and place on wax paper covered cookie sheet. (Should make 45-50)
- Melt chocolate in the microwave per directions on package. (30 sec intervals, stirring in between.)
- Dip the tip of your lollipop stick in a little of the melted candy coating and insert into the cake balls. (Insert a little less than halfway.)
- Place them in the freezer for a little while to firm up.
- Once firm, carefully insert the cake ball into the candy coating by holding the lollipop stick and rotating until covered. Once covered remove and softly tap and rotate until the excess chocolate falls off. Don't tap too hard or the cake ball will fall off, too.
- Place in a styrofoam block to dry.
- Once dry, draw faces with an edible ink pen and allow ink to dry!
Note: I think cake pops are a little more difficult to make than the cupcake pops because of trying to get the candy coating smooth.
If you haven't made them before, check out red velvet cake balls & cupcake pops.
I'm it!
